Professor Ranjit Akolekar

Professor Ranjit Akolekar is an internationally recognised Consultant in Fetal–Maternal Medicine and Obstetrics, with over two decades of experience in the care of high-risk pregnancies. He is an accredited UK sub-specialist in Fetal–Maternal Medicine and leads consultant-delivered specialist pregnancy services across both the NHS and private sectors. His private practice is based at the Harley Street Centre for Women in London as well at The Pregnancy Clinic in Kent. He is the founder and clinical lead of The Pregnancy Clinic, providing evidence-based, personalised antenatal and Fetal medicine care. His practice is underpinned by a commitment to clinical excellence and the delivery of clear, accurate information to support parents in informed decision-making throughout pregnancy. Ranjit is the Lead at Medway Fetal and Maternal Medicine Centre (MFMC), which is a tertiary-level referral centre providing specialist care for complex and high-risk pregnancies across Kent and Medway. The unit is recognised for providing care to complex pregnancies with Fetal and maternal medical conditions with excellent clinical outcomes.

Clinical interests

Professor Akolekar has a keen interest in early prenatal screening for fetal abnormalities, pregnancy complications and adverse pregnancy outcomes. Ranjit believes that a considerable number of pregnancy complications are amenable to early prenatal diagnosis, prevention and management to allow parents to have comfort and confidence about their pregnancy, eventually leading to healthy clinical outcomes. In a small number of pregnancies, where prevention and treatment are not feasible, early and accurate diagnosis provides parents with necessary knowledge to make informed choices.

Academic and research interests

Professor Akolekar holds an academic appointment with the Canterbury Christ Church University. He plays a pivotal role in postgraduate medical education and was instrumental in establishing a Higher Academic PhD programme for postgraduate medical trainees. He works closely with the Faculty of Health and Wellbeing to advance education and research in high-risk obstetrics and Fetal medicine.

Ranjit is currently the research lead for Reproductive Health at Medway and has previously served as Lead for Reproductive Health and Childbirth for the Clinical Research Network of the National Institute of Health Research across Kent, Surrey and Sussex. He has published more than 250 research papers and is widely cited for his work with more than 28,000 scientific citations for his publications.
